About Us

The Vagabond Inn was started by Steve Roberts & Gail Biedermann. Both Steve and Gail have fallen in love with the region, and are sure that you'll enjoy your stay as well. We wanted to create one of the area's most unique lodging options that would beat the ambiance of any hotel or motel and provide a superb and relaxing atmosphere for families or small groups to explore Southern Utah's national parks from—literally a home away from home!

We hope to make this a special place where people from all over the world can come and share this amazing area.

The name of the inn is in tribute to Everett Ruess, "A Vagabond for Beauty", and to all the others throughout the ages who have seen and appreciated the beauty that is here. Everett Ruess was a young artist who mysteriously disappeared from Escalante into the Canyons of the Escalante. Fortunately, before he disappeared he left a rich legacy of writing and artwork on the area that you will no doubt find fascinating as well. There are also two documentaries, several songs and multiple books out about Everett. To learn more, check out the Everett Ruess Pages and don't miss the Escalante Canyons/ Everett Ruess Days Festival!

Steve is an avid bicyclist and outdoor enthusiast. He has biked across southern Utah, Oregon, Texas, Iowa, and ridden extensively elsewhere. He has hiked, kayaked, camped and explored the region for many years!

Gail is an avid cyclist also, and has cycled, hiked, skied, and kayaked the region as well.

Steve and Gail, along with family, also operate Escalante Outfitters just across the street, which offers a complete line of outdoor gear, maps, guidebooks, etc. Escalante Outfitters is also the only package agency in town. Plus the Outfitters has the best coffee shop in town, Esca-Latte Internet Cafe, which also serves homemade pizza, draft beer, great sandwiches and more! In case the Vagabond Inn isn't for you, consider Escalante Outfitters' "Bunkhouse Motel" Cabins —individual hand-crafted cabins and campsites. Another unique lodging option

Our Philosophy:

"Life is good!" This place is very special, an everpresent reminder of how good it is to be alive, and the importance of experiencing life in the fullest. We feel extraordinarily privileged to be here, and are very excited to invite others here to share in this amazing area and resources. We just ask that you would respect the land, and the cultural, historical, paleontological and the myriad of other resources here. We look forward to seeing you!!!
