"Canyoneering is a term used to describe an adventure sport that combines hiking, wading, swimming, boulder hopping, rock climbing and rappelling. Some are calling it the next hot adventure sport." - American Canyoneering Society
The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument's (GSENM) Canyons of the Escalante and the surrounding Canyon Country has an amazing array of canyons and slot canyons known world-wide, and has caught the imaginations of many over the years.
In fact, the pull of the canyons proved too great for one young idealistic artist, Everett Ruess. He had been exploring the canyons around here for years, becoming ever more taken by them. One day in the fall of 1934, he walked out of Escalante Town and into the Escalante Canyons for the last time. He was never heard from again; disappeared into thin air. Did he die in a fall? Murdered? Or simply choose to vanish forever into the canyons he was so smitten with--there have been numerous unconfirmed sightings over the years... Anyhow, Everett Ruess is a bit of a local folk here around here, and you can still read his journals and other writings...
"Once caught by this golden lure you become a prospector for life, condemned, doomed, exalted. One begins to understand why Everett Ruess kept going deeper and deeper into the canyon country, until one day he lost the thread of the labyrinth..." - Edward Abbey
