Why Escalante?
We assume that if you've gotten to the point of looking for lodging, whether it be a hotel, motel, cabin, or campground, that you know a little of the area and have some interest in coming here... but in case you don't, here are a few reasons to consider Escalante:
- This is truly remote, rugged and beautiful country. If you are looking for a little more relaxed experience where the West is still Wild, then you're looking in the right place. Consider for example:
- You've heard of no-stoplight towns, right? Well, we are in a no-stoplight county.
- Only one lawyer in the whole county.
- There are only 4,500 people in a county of 3,338,880 acres.
- Only 4% of the land is privately held! The rest is National Parks/Monuments, National Forest, State Parks, and other government land!
- Here are what a few others have to say about this area:
- Edward Abbey: "Once caught by this golden lure you become a prospector for life, condemned, doomed, exalted. One begins to understand why Everett Ruess kept going deeper and deeper into the canyon country, until one day he lost the thread of the labyrinth..."
- William B. Smart, from the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument's webpage: "... there's still solitude to be found, adventure with the sense of danger, and the wonder of a raw, unfinished and awesomely beautiful world."
- Pearl Baker:"There is something about this country that is deeper than just being here. There is a spiritual quality about it too, that is as deep as life itself."
- Escalante Outfitters: "It is as rugged and remote here as it is beautiful... You will find yourself far from the vestiges, encumbrances, and protections of civilization—Mano E Mano with an untamed, unspoiled landscape.
This country is not for the weak-minded nor the weak-bodied. It will tax both! Yet the rewards are great. Few who visit fail to leave changed.
